The sweet, the strange, the odd, and the strong....

This month has been full of odd and unusual events.  I can't really put my finger on why, I thing it is just because I have an odd family.  I guess I should start with one of my favorite times: Mimi  time!  I had Seth and Maggie for the weekend several weeks ago.  While they were here, we were trying to decide where everyone was going to sleep.  Seth suggested we camp out in the living room.  I was fine with that as long as I could sleep on the couch.  Seth remembered having a tent that he played in when he was younger, and asked if I still had it.  I said I did so he asked if he and Maggie could set it up and sleep in it for the night.  I just laughed because it was a VERY long time ago that Seth played in it and he has become a VERY big 9 year old.  But, because most third grade kids are from Missouri and have that "show me" attitude, I didn't say anything and set the tent up.  Seth looked at it and said, "I don't remember it being that small."  Maggie was so excited and started stuffing pillows and blankets in it right away.  Once they got it all "comfy and cozy" (as Maggie says), they crawled inside.  I think the picture of Seth's face is priceless.  Needless to say, they didn't sleep inside the tent after all.

Not long after this weekend, we decided to get together for dinner at Chili's.  It isn't my favorite restaurant, but since Scott was paying, I didn't complain.  We all met there and when Maggie got out of the car, she was wearing 2 headbands.  Now, that might not sound odd, but the thing is, she was wearing a butterfly headband on her head and a sunshine headband on her waist.  She was so proud of her little outfit, and just pranced right into the restaurant.  She wore them all through the meal, on the ride back to our house, and then home again.  Isn't she adorable? She certainly generate several chuckles in the restaurant that day.

Soon, Easter came along and of course I didn't plan on a meal because I didn't want to be standing all day cooking.  I happened to be visiting Leslie on Saturday evening and asked, "So, what are you cooking for Easter dinner?"  Thankfully, the girl isn't stupid so she and Scott hit the grocery store that night around 9:30, scavenged a pitiful ham and a few other items. Between the three of us, we managed to throw together a meal.  Mom, Dad, Becca, and Seth joined us.  The weather was beautiful and we spent quite a while in Leslie's back yard. Here is a cute picture of Sophie on Pawca's lap. I think he must have given her something she didn't care for!

This past week, Ron and
I celebrated our 38th anniversary.  My sweet husband sends me roses each year; one for each year that we have been married.  He has been out of town on business so when we spoke a couple of nights prior to our anniversary, I asked him to please, not send any roses to school.  I have enough trouble walking myself from my classroom to the car and couldn't imagine lugging a huge arrangement of roses home. He laughed, and said, "Honey, I wouldn't do that to you! I am not sending roses to the school. Don't worry." But, being the eternal romantic he is, he had them delivered to Leslie's house and Ryan (who is on a break from the oil fields) brought them over for me.  There's no doubt about it; my Sugarbear is Romeo at heart.

So, I've posted the sweet (Ron's roses and Sophie Lyn), the strange, (Seth & Maggie trying to sleep in the little tent), and the odd (Maggie and her headbands, and our oddball Easter dinner), so I'll end this post with the strong. I often refer to Seth as the Gentle Giant. He is the sweetest, most non-aggressive guy.  He loves sports, but gets so nervous before a game, that he won't eat.  Because he is a really good hitter, and has a strong arm, he usually bats clean up and plays in right field.  Unfortunately, the kid runs like he as cinder blocks on his feet.  He hits the ball over the fielder's heads but not quite hard enough to go over the fence.  And, because he runs sooooo slowly, he is lucky if he makes it to second base before the ball is back in play.  Every year, he has a really great RBI record, but rarely scores a run himself.  This year, he has made it to third bas twice but hasn't quite made it home because the batter up makes the third out.  We just keep hoping he will one day hit the ball over the fence and actually step foot on home plate.

So, there you have it.  The sweet, the strange, and the strong. Welcome to my world.  I love it!

Spring Break long gone...

Spring break is always way to short, but this year it seemed to fly by even faster than normal. I guess it is because I tried to cram too many things into too few days.
Most of the week was spent painting the house in Killeen and preparing it for sale.
But the rest of the time, I tried to spend as much time as possible with family.

We started with family Rock Band night at Leslie and G's house.
Scott has the Beatles version of the game.
And, because the entire family was raised on their music we love it!

We are even exposing Seth, Maggie, and Sophie to the Beatles at an early age. Maggie just doesn't realize that, unlike Ringo's drums, hers weren't actually turned on.

I managed to get some time in with my daughters for lunch and crafts (see previous post).
Family dinner with my parents was held at our house with barbeque dogs and burgers.

And, we ended with family game night at Rebecca and Edward's house.

G doesn't really like playing games.  His family really never spent much time playing games while he was growing up.
However, he does love watching soccer on the Spanish channel while the rest of us play.

Sophie is always happy with the oddest things.  She spent quite a while just playing with Hoss's dog kennel!

While the time went by much too quickly, I loved every moment spent with the greatest people I know.

Spring Break day 1...

Spring Break actually started on Friday with family game night.  However, I wanted to get these pictures posted while I was thinking about it.  I have really good intentions about getting things posted right away.  It doesn't always happen.

Anyway, I wanted to have a fun, stress-free day with my daughters.  I found the cutest Easter craft on one of the craft blogs and thought it might be the perfect activity.  You just use scrapbooking paper and terra cotta pots to make these adorable baskets.

I think they all turned out very cute.  After all our hard work, we celebrated our success by eating delicious ice cream at Maggie Moo's.  Can't wait for our April get together.

Home Teaching...

Normally, I am not one to complain when people care about me.  However, I had to whine and complain today.  Yesterday, we got an early morning phone call from Brother Bryson.  He and his wife are our home teachers from church.  They are an older couple that like to get out during the daylight hours to visit.  Being a working woman, I would prefer to have them visit one evening during the week so that my weekends are free for housework, errands, etc.  But, we set our appointment time for 4:00 and they came over for a nice visit; leaving around 5:30.  I have to admit, I asked Ron if there were any brethren that didn't do their home teaching, and asked why he couldn't assign them to us.  He just gave me that look and counseled me by saying,  "now don't be like that... the Brysons like coming to see us." So, I quit complaining (eventually) and enjoyed their visit.
However, today I had to complain again.  Ron had an appointment to do his home teaching at 2:00 this afternoon.  He got home around 3:30 and said, "Brother Carter called and wants to know if he can come home teaching today at 4:00."  I just looked at Ron and said, "Are you kidding me?!?!? We were just visited yesterday by the Brysons!" Ron got that confused look on his face that he sometimes gets when he has too many pots on his stove.  Finally, the light went on and he said, "Your right! Brother Carter and Brother Armstrong haven't been our home teachers for months! I'll call him and remind him of that."  What can I say; MEN!!!

Family changes...

For the past few months, Ron has been "retired" again.  He had been working for a company that had a government contract to teach a software program to the soldiers. And, as often happens to contractors, they were underbid when it was time for a new contract.  Ron enjoyed a short hiatus from work, but tomorrow he goes back.  The company that won the new contract offered him a position doing the same thing, so he took it.  While short-lived; I loved having him around so much.
One of the highlights of my week is family dinner.  Ron and I get together with my parents, our children, and the grandkids each Wednesday evening to share a meal and enjoy one another's company.  Sadly, this past week will be the last one that we will share with Ryan for quite a while. He has been waiting for a year now for the petroleum industry to recover in this disastrous economy and begin hiring again. Ryan finally got a position with Quality Logging in Midland, Texas and left on Thursday. While I know this past year has been hard for him, I have loved having him around for a change.  Luckily, Midland is only about a 6 hour drive. Hopefully, we will see him often.
My grandson, Seth, turned 9 today.  It amazes me that he has remained such a sweet, gentle, and loving little boy.  I know that he isn't always perfect, but he sure is close.  It amazes me that simple things bring him such pleasure.  When Becca asked him what he wanted to do for his birthday, he just wanted to go out to dinner at his favorite restaurant with the family.  Here are a few pictures I took while we were there.
Seth has never been a big fan of sweets, but he sure loves beans in any form so Mexican food is always a hit with him.  Scott had his National Guard Drill weekend, but his assignment is in Gatesville so he was able to join us for dinner.
Aunt B gave Sophie her first taste of lemon, and I think she actually liked it. Sophie is growing so fast! She is crawling all over the place, babbling like crazy, and has the cutest little teeth! While Sophie was enjoying the lemon, Maggie chomped down some chips and queso.  Her impish smile always delights me.  She didn't quite understand why Seth didn't have a birthday cake.  What Seth lacks in the sweet tooth area, she more than makes up for it!

As the family continues to grow and changes occur, I am truly thankful for these precious moments of togetherness.

Moving to Temple, again...

About two years ago, Ron and I bought a home in Temple, Texas.  We had to do a lot of painting, stripping of wallpaper, and replacing of floors.  It still has a few things that we need to take care of, but in time we will get it all done.
Now, we are working on a different house.  Leslie and G found a great fixer-upper here in Temple.
The house was being remodeled by an older couple that ended up getting a divorce.  It was sold as-is to avoid foreclosure.  It didn't have any flooring in the family room, entry way, or formal living room.  But, the guys managed to put down laminate flooring in the living room and hope to get the family room done next.
The kitchen was basically an empty shell. However, by law a house can't be sold without a stove or sink so the sellers put those things in.  Leslie has painted the walls, but left the walls white where they hope to some day put cabinets.
They still have a lot of work ahead of them, but I think they will have a wonderful home n which to raise their little family.
The best part is that it is in a wonderful, well established neighborhood only two blocks away from our house.

New hip...new possibilities!

During my second pregnancy, I started having a lot of trouble with my left hip.  There were times when it would buckle, my range of motions started to decrease, and cold weather really brought out the discomfort.  With each pregnancy, AND advancing age, the hip continued to deteriorate. In 2007, the hip was starting to have an impact on the quality of my life. Around this time, 2 people VERY dear to me (Barbara Becker and my mother, Shirley) were having joints replaced. Brave Barbara had both knees done at one time and Mom had one hip replaced. Both of them said it was the best decision they had ever made.  They encouraged me to not put my own surgery off.  I was mostly concerned that the doctor might say I was too young to consider that route, but when we got back from our last cross country trip, I knew I couldn't put it off any longer.  I went to see my family doctor during the Christmas break.  When I brought the subject up, she said age shouldn't even be considered with deciding on hip replacement. She gave me a referral to an orthopedic surgeon and I saw him yesterday.  Good news is; I will be back to normal by August.  Bad news is, I have to wait until June for surgery.
