Leslie’s family 2022

2022 Recap of the Gutierrez Gang!

Sophie, Maggie, Leslie and Gerson

The things that bring value to life are not tangible. They are the time, dedication, service, love, and support we give to others. Especially to our family members. As children grow into adults, their morals, ethics, values and priorities begin to mimic those of their parents.  In Leslie, I see a daily commitment to raising her girls to become Christlike, poised, well-rounded and service oriented young women; just like their Momma. Living closer to them this year has given Ron and I an opportunity to see the girls literally bloom before our eyes.

Sophie and Maggie at Ft. Worth stockyards.

Sophie has spent the year building on her natural athletic ability. She is on the cheer squad at her middle school. She tried out for volleyball and had a successful season with a picture perfect serve. She stretched herself artistically by creating the most adorable crocheted mug caps for her mother; and, perfecting her nail art. She has a great group of friends from school and church and is doing fairly well in school. She did struggle a bit with school assignments, not always utilizing her 504 accommodations for dyslexia. However, that is part of finding her own way. She will either become her own advocate, or develop coping skills. Sophie also had an uncomfortable first this year. Her first stay in the hospital. Sadly, she developed a staph infection on her chin and was admitted until antibiotics got it under control. Thankfully, she is now healthy and has minimal scaring.

Family Performance

Maggie’s year is an example of how one single class can change your life. Last year, she replaced her outdoor living elective with a dance class. Because of that one choice, Maggie discovered a love for dance and developed so much grace and coordination! We, as a family, have marveled at how this shy, pre-maturely born, clumsy girl has transformed into an outgoing, confident, and graceful young woman. Maggie is now a member of the Charmers dance team at her school. She continues to be a member of the honors choir. She shares her love of music through singing, dancing, and playing piano. Lastly, a couple of Maggie’s important first this year have been getting her driver’s license and having her first boyfriend.

As I listen to and watch Jamie and Leslie fight the good fight in the battle waged by career women who are also mothers, I am so thankful they have always put their kids first… above work, house and home, spouse, and personal interests. It is difficult and exhausting battle. Luckily, they are both winning the war. Their girls are lucky to have them for their mothers.

Soul sisters…

Leslie, like Jamie, has an extremely stressful job, regulated by government laws and guidelines, that often make the job challenging. Leslie made the decision to switch from elementary school therapy to middle and high school. The students there have entirely different needs and goals.  As the school year reaches the mid-point, she seems to have found her footing.

On top of work, Leslie is Maggie and Sophie’s greatest supporter, joining every booster club, attending every meeting, supplying service hours for every activity, and still managing to keep things running smoothly at home. As an added bonus to me, Leslie rarely misses her daily, “how are you guys doing” call or text to me. She truly has a nurturer’s heart.

The four legged population in the Gutierrez house is now up to 2 furry friends. Our puppy, Boomer, was too large to meet the size restrictions for our community. Honestly, as much as he had been sick in the spring, I totally expected him to cross over the rainbow bridge before we moved. Thankfully, Tico is Boomer’s best bud, Maggie and Sophie love him, and Leslie loves all dogs. G isn’t too happy about Boomer living there. But, I think he is used to being outvoted and over ruled. Boomer and Tico keep each other company during the day and really enjoy their walks together. They even dress alike! Ron and I are still able to see him often and have seen a positive change in our old man dig. He hasn’t been sick at all and loves his new home.

The boys in their matching bandannas.

Gerson has changed jobs, again, this year. I swear, he switches companies more often than Ron did while on active duty! He is still working in HR… just don’t ask me what that is. I only know he has clients, does handbook translations into Spanish, deals with benefits and travels. Oh, and watches soccer games on TV while he is in the office.

Gerson at work.

His interest this year have been playing soccer, following World Cup soccer, supporting a Dallas based semi-pro soccer team called the Vaqueros, officiating YMCA soccer, coaching a soccer team, and watching soccer on TV and YouTube. He is also very competitive when playing table soccer.

Coaching Sophie.

Playing and probably cheating, based on the look on Sophie’s face.

Moving to the Ft. Worth area has also afforded Gerson an opportunity to actually take Leslie on an occasional date night to watch a football game at UNT, their alma mater.

Go UNT!

My hope for the Gutierrez family during the 2023 year would be strong backs and less tender bottoms to withstand many hours of bleacher sitting; lots of quality family time, good health and fewer orthodontist visits; healthy and happy puppies; and less annoying neighbors!

Etsy Shop and Sami Show; Final Chapter

When I inherited all of Mom's sewing machines, gadgets, notions, books, patterns, and fabric, it was overwhelming! There is a whole post, complete with pictures, describing the vast amount of stuff we moved out of her house after she passed away. I honestly never expected to whittle it down to a reasonable amount.

Over the past two years, I have donated boxes and boxes of fabric to the local quilt guild. I've made quilts to donate to local charities. I've made stacks of pillow cases to donate to the nursing home. I finished several of Mom's unfinished quilts and gave them to all of my children and grand children. I finished one of her baby quilts and gave it to a niece's baby. I turned several of her orphan blocks into art work for the walls of my home. I even convinced one of my daughters to help me set up an Etsy shop and participate in the local Sami shows to sell various items.

Our last Sami show and most recent inventory items have pretty much used up the miscellaneous bits and pieces that really weren't big enough or numerous enough to make a quilt out of. I had reached a point where I was going to have to start buying fabric to go with what was left in order to make something that had matching fabric in it. That's when I realized it was time to stop.

During the time I've been using up Mom's dribs and drabs of fabric, my designing, cutting, sewing, quilting, and binding skills have improved ten fold! While it has been bitter sweet to work through her stash; but, I think she would be proud of my growth as a quilter.

So, this is the last post about items I've made for the Etsy shop or a Sami show. The existing inventory will be available as long as the current listing is up. Once they expire and it is time to renew, the shop will close and we will no longer set up at Sami Shows. I'll even retire my tax ID number!

It was fun having Maggie, Sophie, and Leslie help out at the Sami Shows. I loved that the girls made their own craft items and sold them as well. I appreciated Leslie's administrative support with the shop; but, now it is becoming a job. That's when you realize it might not be much fun if you keep going. I don't want to turn a hobby into a job because it takes the pure joy out of it.

So here are the final pictures of Etsy Inventory and our Sami Show experience. It was fun; but, the party is over!

Where did the year go? Oh, here is the rest of March!

So, I took a few minutes to look through the blogs that I follow and learned a valuable lesson: recording something a few months late is better than recording nothing at all. Of course, this year has been an emotionally rough one and when my emotions are raw I tend to withdraw.  I am starting to heal from the loss of Dad and have survived a few major events without him. So, I'll spend the next few posts filling in the blanks from 2015.

In March, the girls from the family made a trip to Marble Falls Sweet Berry Farm. We picked strawberries, the girls played on the giant trampoline, ate ice cream, and enjoyed the beautiful Texas weather.

It was one of our first outings with Jamie and her twins. They quickly wormed their way into our hearts.

The berries weren't as flavorful this year as they have been in the past; not really tasty enough to just eat. But, Leslie helped me make several pints of strawberry jam. We used the Pioneer Woman's recipe for strawberry jam and one I found on the internet for Strawberry-Jalapeno Jam. It was really good!

I know it is much easier to run to the store and pick up a package of strawberries that have been mass produced; and, it is probably less expensive to buy processed jams and jellies. However, I will always remember picking strawberries from my Granny Alice's garden and helping Mom "put them up" in the freezer or make jelly. Luckily, Leslie and I are of the same mind set and want to create the same type of memories for the grands.  So what if the berry patch is an hour away and it's a little more expensive?!?  Making memories is worth it! And, for some reason picking berries with these cuties is a whole lot of fun!

Walburg: German Beer Garden

Catch-up post: Trip to Walburg.

While the red-headed son-in-law was home, he wanted to go to Walburg for some "good German food." Rebecca (#1 daughter) called Leslie (#2 daughter) to see if she & the Mexican son-in-law wanted to meet for dinner. We got a call, and decided to tag along. Leslie and G have been to Walburg several times because G loves to dance. They have live music and he dances with the granddaughters and has a blast.
We all ordered some type of German food: curry wurst, schnitzel, purple cabbage, German potato salad, and pom-fritz. I won't go into detail, but will simply state that the food was terrible. I hoped the apple strudel I ordered for dessert would be redeeming; it wasn't.
So, we sat and chatted; waiting for the band to start playing. I was expecting traditional German beer garden music, because all of the band member were showing up in their cute little German shorts. However, we were once again very disappointed. Imagine polka music, played with a country music slant, sung by an off-key Texan. Not pleasant! It didn't stop G from dancing.
Luckily, we were able to salvage the evening by going to Maggie-Moo's for ice cream.

That's a big pretzel!

It doesn't taste as good as the ones in the mall.

Do I have to eat it?

Yea! Let's go get ice cream!

Ice cream? Did someone say ice cream?

Do we have to wait for the band to play? Boo!

The Beach Trip

I've been neglecting the blog. No excuses; just been lazy. Therefore, this will be the first of many "catching up" posts.

My summer break started back in June with a trip to Port Aransas, Texas. Edward, the red-headed son-in-law, was home from the Middle East and wanted to do some deep sea fishing. He and Becca rented a cute beach house and invited the rest of the family to go along. All we had to do was provide the meals. Not a bad deal for a week on the beach.  Sadly, Ron didn't go with us.  He is planning on taking time to visit his family in Ohio later this summer and thought it best to work. Having a job that only pays when he works, makes it difficult for him to take as much time off as in the past. So, he did doggy day care while we played in the sand.

Here are some pictures of our trip.
Fishing on the coast was a bit of a challenge.

Ed, Seth and Scott gave it a good try.

The 1 fish that was caught was evidently not edible because they threw it back.

The sea weed was insane! We were told that it gets better later in the summer.

Seth's catch!

The kids loved playing in the surf. I learned that I do not like salt water.

They, on the other hand, didn't seem to mind it.

Sitting in the waves was fine, at low tide. Any other time, they wiped you out!

Scott opted to sit on the sand instead.

The Mexican branch of the family took a day to visit Padre Island. I stayed at the beach house and read.

Another cute photo op site in town.

Even the big boys agreed to let me take their picture.

I enjoyed getting to spend so much time with some of the family. We played games, sat on the porch and chatted for hours, played in the pool at the beach house, collected sea shells, and laughed at the stories of Ed, Becca, Seth, and Scott going deep sea fishing. We enjoyed a delicious meal of red snapper, the fruits of their labors, and had a wonderful time.
