Leslie’s family 2022

2022 Recap of the Gutierrez Gang!

Sophie, Maggie, Leslie and Gerson

The things that bring value to life are not tangible. They are the time, dedication, service, love, and support we give to others. Especially to our family members. As children grow into adults, their morals, ethics, values and priorities begin to mimic those of their parents.  In Leslie, I see a daily commitment to raising her girls to become Christlike, poised, well-rounded and service oriented young women; just like their Momma. Living closer to them this year has given Ron and I an opportunity to see the girls literally bloom before our eyes.

Sophie and Maggie at Ft. Worth stockyards.

Sophie has spent the year building on her natural athletic ability. She is on the cheer squad at her middle school. She tried out for volleyball and had a successful season with a picture perfect serve. She stretched herself artistically by creating the most adorable crocheted mug caps for her mother; and, perfecting her nail art. She has a great group of friends from school and church and is doing fairly well in school. She did struggle a bit with school assignments, not always utilizing her 504 accommodations for dyslexia. However, that is part of finding her own way. She will either become her own advocate, or develop coping skills. Sophie also had an uncomfortable first this year. Her first stay in the hospital. Sadly, she developed a staph infection on her chin and was admitted until antibiotics got it under control. Thankfully, she is now healthy and has minimal scaring.

Family Performance

Maggie’s year is an example of how one single class can change your life. Last year, she replaced her outdoor living elective with a dance class. Because of that one choice, Maggie discovered a love for dance and developed so much grace and coordination! We, as a family, have marveled at how this shy, pre-maturely born, clumsy girl has transformed into an outgoing, confident, and graceful young woman. Maggie is now a member of the Charmers dance team at her school. She continues to be a member of the honors choir. She shares her love of music through singing, dancing, and playing piano. Lastly, a couple of Maggie’s important first this year have been getting her driver’s license and having her first boyfriend.

As I listen to and watch Jamie and Leslie fight the good fight in the battle waged by career women who are also mothers, I am so thankful they have always put their kids first… above work, house and home, spouse, and personal interests. It is difficult and exhausting battle. Luckily, they are both winning the war. Their girls are lucky to have them for their mothers.

Soul sisters…

Leslie, like Jamie, has an extremely stressful job, regulated by government laws and guidelines, that often make the job challenging. Leslie made the decision to switch from elementary school therapy to middle and high school. The students there have entirely different needs and goals.  As the school year reaches the mid-point, she seems to have found her footing.

On top of work, Leslie is Maggie and Sophie’s greatest supporter, joining every booster club, attending every meeting, supplying service hours for every activity, and still managing to keep things running smoothly at home. As an added bonus to me, Leslie rarely misses her daily, “how are you guys doing” call or text to me. She truly has a nurturer’s heart.

The four legged population in the Gutierrez house is now up to 2 furry friends. Our puppy, Boomer, was too large to meet the size restrictions for our community. Honestly, as much as he had been sick in the spring, I totally expected him to cross over the rainbow bridge before we moved. Thankfully, Tico is Boomer’s best bud, Maggie and Sophie love him, and Leslie loves all dogs. G isn’t too happy about Boomer living there. But, I think he is used to being outvoted and over ruled. Boomer and Tico keep each other company during the day and really enjoy their walks together. They even dress alike! Ron and I are still able to see him often and have seen a positive change in our old man dig. He hasn’t been sick at all and loves his new home.

Gerson has changed jobs, again, this year. I swear, he switches companies more often than Ron did while on active duty! He is still working in HR… just don’t ask me what that is. I only know he has clients, does handbook translations into Spanish, deals with benefits and travels. Oh, and watches soccer games on TV while he is in the office.

Gerson at work.

His interest this year have been playing soccer, following World Cup soccer, supporting a Dallas based semi-pro soccer team called the Vaqueros, officiating YMCA soccer, coaching a soccer team, and watching soccer on TV and YouTube. He is also very competitive when playing table soccer.

Coaching Sophie.

Playing and probably cheating, based on the look on Sophie’s face.

Moving to the Ft. Worth area has also afforded Gerson an opportunity to actually take Leslie on an occasional date night to watch a football game at UNT, their alma mater.

Go UNT!

My hope for the Gutierrez family during the 2023 year would be strong backs and less tender bottoms to withstand many hours of bleacher sitting; lots of quality family time, good health and fewer orthodontist visits; healthy and happy puppies; and less annoying neighbors!

Moments...

It is amazing how quickly sweet moments with my grandchildren seem to fly by.  Now that Seth is older, we don't see him nearly as often as we used to.  I knew that time would come and am so thankful that I took advantage of having him come visit whenever the opportunity was available.  I can't wait for summer to get here.  I have a few projects in mind that I think Seth will really enjoy. In the meantime, I am taking advantage of every moment I can to spend time with Sophie and Maggie. Because, the time will also come much too quickly when they will grow and be too busy to spend time at Mimi and Poppy's house.
Here is just a sampling of some of the moments we have spent together recently.

During Spring Break, Ron and I worked on repairing some of the damage the drought caused in the yard.  Toward the end of the week, Leslie and Gerson decided to take a trip to Marble Falls and Inks Lake.  They invited us to tag along.

Here are some pictures taken in Marble Falls...

Sophie was a little grumpy about having an empty berry box.
She didn't have the patience to fill it herself so let Poppy and I
take it off her hands.

Maggie enjoyed the berry picking much more than Sophie.
She was so eager to pick, it didn't matter what size or
color her berries were!

Poppy and I grabbed our sweet grand babies for
a photo moment in front of the barn.

Sophie was fascinated with the horns on the goats at the
petting park.  She was also a little worried about the goat's
neck getting stuck in the fence.

Maggie loved the drooping ears on the little goats.  She remembered
visiting our friend Mary Garcia, and her wonderful farm.
Maggie wants to go back and see the spring animals.

Poppy helped the girls get into the cars on the tractor train.
Sophie wasn't too wild about going alone.  Gerson had gone
back to the car and we were a little worried about Poppy
trying to get into the cart with her!

Luckily, Gerson got back in time to climb aboard with the
girls and go along for the ride.

A new attraction that was a big hit for the girls was a jump park.
I don't know exactly how this thing worked, but they loved it!

All I could think of while they were jumping was, isn't this where the
blackberries are supposed to be?!??!?

Recently, soccer season has started up again.  Maggie was actually too old for the indoor age group; but because Gerson agreed to coach again, they let him have Maggie on his team.  I never thought I would say, "Maggie is the biggest kid on her team!"

Here is a picture taken at her first game.

Her optic yellow shirt actually looks great with her dark skin.

I love baking cinnamon rolls!  Conference weekend is the perfect time to make them.  We don't have to be at church early because general conference is on the BYU channel.  We invited Leslie and her little family up for brunch.  We had scrambled eggs, fruit salad, biscuits, gravy, and these delicious rolls.  Everything tasted yummy!

Maggie said they are even better than Ikea's...

After eating, we watched the first Sunday session together.

Gerson was a little too excited...

Sophie made herself comfortable in my recliner... sipping orange juice
(a benefit of being potty trained is NOT getting a horrible rash from
orange juice anymore), and playing with stickers.

Leslie had Maggie all prepared with her conference packet (Bingo, color the apostle's tie,
match the picture with the speaker, etc.).
Soon, summer will be here (less than 45 school days left) and I hope to have even more precious moments with the most important people in my life.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday 2011

Now that the children are all grown and comfortable in the kitchen, Thanksgiving has become so much more relaxing and enjoyable for me.  We all split up the parts of the meal and met at Leslie & G's house for dinner.  We had all the usual yummy food:
Ron & I = roasted turkey & stuffing
Ryan = smoked turkey
Scott = rolls
Becca = spinach dip & hash brown casserole
Leslie = yams, green bean casserole, corn souffle
Mom & Dad = pies
We had way too much food; but, everyone had left overs for the entire weekend.
We ate early enough to let the family watch the Cowboys play and give me a chance to walk up to our house and grab a nap.
Scott & G trying on the ugly sweaters from Goodwill...
It is a little scary that G is so comfortable in a woman's sweater...

Leslie made cute turkey shirts for the girls...

After the game, Mom, Dad, and Ryan headed home, Ron went back to our house to watch more football, then the rest of us played some board games before making our plans for Black Friday shopping.
Sweet granddaughters watching a movie...

Our totally tacky shirts...
I made mine out of foam stickers... unfortunately, most of them fell off before I got home...

Becca came up with the idea of getting tacky Christmas sweaters from Goodwill for everyone to wear.  Scott had a little trouble finding something to fit; so, Leslie cut apart a vest and sewed it onto a long sleeved Tee shirt. He sure did get some strange looks.  The best was when he met a fellow firefighter at Wal-Mart.  The guy kept trying to avert his eyes from Scott's shirt and carry on a normal conversation at the same time.  Scott didn't even notice it, but Becca and I were cracking up just watching him!

We only hit 2 stores: Wal-Mart & Kohl's; but here is the run down of bargains:
Becca, Scott, & Leslie all got new mixers.
Scott bought new Paula Dean cookware, a mini chopper, and a home-made soda machine.
Leslie & I got new crock pots and Bissel 3-in-1 sweepers.
Leslie got new jammies for the girls, new dish towels for the kitchen, and new cookie sheets.  She really needed new muffin pans, but I don't know if she picked those up or not.
Seth got some new XBox games and a marshmallow gun.
And, I got a small shop vac.

We did a little "barfing" and lots of laughing along the way.  Good times; can't wait for next year.
